Ed Hume Headlines The 14th Annual Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo, March 12 and 13 at the Sequim High School

March 7th, 2011

Planting a garden can be as easy as putting seeds in the ground.  Then why does the garden not produce?    Landscaping is just planting flowers, scrubs and trees.  Yet plants die and others take over the yard.  If you have experienced either of these problems, or both, with your vegetable garden or landscaping, there is hope and there are solutions.

NPBA has the pleasure to present Northwest gardening expert Ed Hume to the Expo this year. He is the host of KONG TV’s “Gardening in America” and author of “Gardening with Ed Hume, Northwest Gardening Made Easy.” He will be at the show presenting “Easy Landscaping Ideas” on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. and “Northwest Vegetable Gardens” on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. He also will be available for book signing before and after his presentations. Please plan to attend his presentations as well as those of the many great speakers that are a part of our show.

Expo 2011 offers a variety of activities in addition to the over 90 inside and outside booths with over 75 exhibitors ready to talk about your new home construction, remodeling, landscaping, enerby or other home project needs.

Attendees can attend any of the free live demonstrations ranging in topics from the 400 square foot rule on building a garage or barn; all you need to know about heat pumps; solar electricity for your home and business; ‘passive house’ construction and heating benefits; to how to select a builder.

In the middle of Expo attendees will find an oasis to reenergize them.  The Sequim Gazette offers a place to rest, chat with friends, or attend a book signing with Ed Hume.  Find your comfort zone in booths 218-219 located in Hall #2. Come away refreshed and ready to take on more of Expo!

Food fare continues with the Sequim High School Sophomore and Junior classes teaming up to provide snacks and lunch items at a reasonable cost.  Leonard Johnson, with the family owned and operated catering business,  Mystery Bay Seafood Catering,  returns bringing mouth watering, fresh seafood along with other traditional fare.

Spinning its way into the 21th century is John Elliott and his live wood turning exhibit of making wooden tops.  Children, young and old alike, will be mesmerized by an almost forgotten trade and filled with wonder as John turns out tops to occupy hours of your time.

Children can experience the accomplishment of building their own birdhouse under the supervision of the 2011-12 Future Builders students and instructors.  Watch as your special child’s eyes light up putting hammer to nail creating a sanctuary.

This year we also have arranged for a live building demonstration called re:structure re:design. Peninsula College Green Construction instructor Jon Martin and students will be building a small garden shed out of recycled and salvaged building materials on the show grounds. This portion of the show is sponsored by Built Green Clallam County as part of its commitment to educate the public and builders about reducing construction waste. A special thank you is owed to Around Again, our local recycling, deconstruction and salvage store for helping provide materials for this competition. Please check in with Gavin Wuttken at 3:15 p.m. Sunday for a presentation about projects and information about the nonprofit store at 765 W. Washington St.

Capstone Sponsor for the 2011 Expo is PUD District No. 1 of Clallam County.  Cornerstone Sponsors include Angeles Millwork and Lumber Co., Inc., Hartnagel Building Supply, Bliemeisters’ Wood Works, Inc., Built Green of Clallam County, First Federal, KSQM 91.5 FM, Sequim Gazette and WAVE Broadband.

Expo is the place for building, remodeling and energy ideas.  Experience Expo March 12 and 13 at the Sequim High School.  For more information please visit sequimexpo.com.

New OSHA Residential Fall Protection Guidelines

March 7th, 2011

On Dec. 16, 2010 OSHA rescinded STD 03-00-001 – STD 3-0.1A – Plain Language Revision of OSHA Instruction STD 3.1, Interim Fall Protection Compliance Guidelines for Residential Construction which had been in place since 1995. This directive allowed employers doing specified residential construction activities to comply with the requirements of OSHA’s Subpart M by implementing alternative fall protection and work procedures prescribed in the directive, however without a prior showing of infeasibility or greater hazard and without a written fall protection plan. OSHA did not intend STD 3.1 to be a permanent policy and it has been replaced by STD 03-11-002 Compliance Guidance for Residential Construction, which becomes effective June 16, 2011.  To read about the major changes in the rule, click here.

re:structure re:design Competition Announced!

November 12th, 2010

The Newest, Most Exciting event to hit the North Olympic Peninsula and YOU can be part of it!
This event will exceed your wildest dreams about advertising opportunities.
Karen Nordstrom, Account Executive with Comcast Spotlight the Ad Sales division of Comcast, along with Expo Chair Kim Beus and Executive Officer FaLeana Wech have put together the first of its kind program inspired by the “Design Star” competition seen on cable network HGTV.
Open to all NPBA and Built Green of Clallam County members in good standing, the re:Structure-re:Design program reaches out to those who like challenges and are creatively competitive.
This competition will push your creative talents to the limits, test your ability to work under pressure, raise your team management abilities to the max, push mentally and physically and finally, judge whether you can complete a project within 24 hours while being filmed for the media! Does this peak your curiosity?
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Get yourself a team of 3; can be any member of NPBA or Built Green Clallam County; give your team a name. Read the rules found on the registration form working with your team to put together a Design Binder on your plans to complete an 8′ x 12′ structure.
2. Fill out the re:Structure-re:Design registration form and return to NPBA by December 1 along with your Design Binder and $150 entry fee.
Entrant’s Design Binders will be on display at the December 9 Holiday Gala. From there they will be on display at various member locations throughout Clallam County. Judges will gather and select 3 finalists who will move on to the on-site competition during Expo March 12 and 13.
There the 3 teams along with a student team will be given their structure to finish… within a 24 hour time frame that starts at 9 AM on Saturday March 12 and ends Sunday March 13 at 8:59 AM. Filming will capture the artists at work and a professional photographer will be on site as well.
What? You don’t have your registration form? Click here to download a copy of the re:Structure-re:Design Registration Form.
Now the challenge begins. Good luck to everyone that enters. And remember, be sure to have fun with this!

Get ready to rally and check out these awesome I-1082 videos!

October 15th, 2010

LET’S GET READY TO RALLY…

Are you mad and don’t want to take it anymore?

Then join other small business owners at 10 a.m., October 20, for a protest rally at the state Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) building in Tumwater.

Whether it’s the ever-increasing workers’ compensation taxes, the crummy service from apathetic state bureaucrats or the fact L&I is playing politics by refusing to tell us how much of a tax hike to expect for 2011, your complaints are welcome.

Now is your chance to tell L&I how you really feel.

We’ll have hot coffee to keep you warm and bullhorns to make sure out-of-touch L&I bureaucrats hear what you have to say.

Bring your own sign to wave with your personal message to L&I, or grab one of the pre-made ones from the stack we’ll have available.   Either way, let’s make sure L&I bureaucrats get the message that they are supposed to work for us.

What?              Protest Rally
